Being the first girl band to debut under a label founded by a global phenomenon carries immense pressure. For BABYDON’TCRY, the inaugural female act from PSY’s P-NATION, that pressure is a driving force. The multinational P-NATION girl band made their official comeback on March 24th with their first mini-album, ‘AFTERCRY’, stepping into a spotlight sharpened by high expectations.
PSY’s “Bittersweet” Guidance
The group, composed of Korean members Ihyun and Beni and Japanese members Kumi and Mia, has already garnered international attention. For instance, they were featured in British music magazine NME’s list of ‘Essential Emerging Artists’ shortly after their debut last June. However, the most significant guidance comes from within their own agency. At a media showcase in Seoul, the members shared the advice from their famous boss. “CEO PSY told us he ‘has a good feeling’ about this comeback,” they revealed. “He also urged us to ‘practice with a greater sense of responsibility because we’ve received such good songs’.”
For an international audience, PSY is the artist behind the 2012 viral hit “Gangnam Style,” a track that shattered YouTube records and introduced K-Pop to a massive global stage. His transition from artist to industry executive with P-NATION is closely watched by investors. Consequently, his direct involvement and high praise for BABYDON’TCRY’s music signals a significant strategic investment for the company.
Crafting ‘AFTERCRY’ with an All-Star Team
PSY’s confidence is well-founded, considering the creative team behind ‘AFTERCRY’. The album, featuring five tracks including the title song ‘Bittersweet’, was crafted by some of the K-Pop industry’s most sought-after talents. The lineup includes star producer Ryan Jhun, rapper and producer Giriboy, and celebrated lyricist Kim Eana. This is not just a debut album; it’s a statement of intent. Working with such a team is a privilege, as member Mia noted, “It was an honor to work with them. I was particularly touched by lyricist Kim Eana’s line, ‘Writing in my diary that nothing lasts forever’.”
The title track ‘Bittersweet’ is described as a song about “growing pains,” wrapped in a bright, catchy sound. For business observers, assembling a team of this caliber for a rookie group is a clear indicator of P-NATION’s ambition to produce a top-tier act with immediate commercial appeal. It minimizes risk and maximizes the potential for a breakout hit.
A ‘Tears Trilogy’ and Global Ambitions
This album marks the beginning of a larger narrative project: a ‘Tears Trilogy’. “This album isn’t about the aftermath of tears, but about the time and process leading up to them,” explained Ihyun. It’s a concept that resonates deeply with the members’ own journeys. Ihyun recalled her “bittersweet” memories of trainee evaluations, where harsh feedback often led to tears. “Without that time, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” she reflected.
This theme of youthful struggle is a powerful narrative tool. Beni, who started her trainee life at a young age, added, “I don’t have as many school-day memories as my peers. I feel proud of and grateful to my younger self who set out early to chase a dream.” As a result, the group’s goals are both domestic and global. “We want to show more diverse sides of ourselves and prove we are a charming group,” Ihyun stated, adding a desire to win first place on a music show—a key benchmark of success in the competitive K-Pop market. Furthermore, they expressed a strong hope for “more opportunities to meet our international fans in person.”
BABYDON’TCRY’s comeback is more than just a new album release. It’s a carefully orchestrated move by PSY’s girl band to carve out a unique space in the global music scene, blending high-quality production with a relatable, heartfelt story. As Beni declared, “We want to surprise the world with our amazing performance.” Given their backing and ambition, the world is certainly watching this P-NATION girl band.
