On a July morning in Busan, a room full of delegates voted on a pile of mud.
The Getbol Korean tidal flats had just been enlarged as a UNESCO World Heritage site. These are the vast, grey, glistening plains that appear twice a day along the country’s western and southern coasts. Four sites became six. The protected area grew by roughly 22 percent. For a country with only two natural World Heritage properties, the decision mattered more than the modest headlines suggested.
Yet most visitors to Korea will never see them. Tourists chase palaces in Seoul, cherry blossoms in Jinhae, and volcanic craters on Jeju. Meanwhile, the strangest landscape in the country sits four hours southwest, appearing and vanishing on a twelve-hour schedule. It feeds half a million birds and several thousand families.
This is a guide to that landscape. What it is, why UNESCO cares, who makes a living from it, and how you would actually go and stand on it.
What the Getbol Korean Tidal Flats Actually Are
Start with the word. Getbol (갯벌) simply means tidal flat in Korean, though the English translation undersells it. These are not beaches. Instead, they are enormous deposits of fine silt and sand, laid down over thousands of years where rivers meet the Yellow Sea. The tide then exposes them twice a day.
The scale is the first surprise. Korea’s west coast has one of the largest tidal ranges on the planet. In some bays the water drops as much as nine metres, and around six metres at Gochang. As a result, the sea does not simply lap and retreat. It withdraws for kilometres, leaving behind a shining plain you can walk across. Then it returns fast enough to strand anyone who misjudges the clock.
Twice a day, in other words, a significant portion of Korea’s territory changes state.
That rhythm is what makes the mud so productive. Each tide delivers oxygen, nutrients, and organic matter into the sediment. Consequently, the flats support a dense biological engine. Diatoms coat the surface film, worms and molluscs work below, and crabs and mudskippers patrol on top. Birds then arrive from thousands of kilometres away to eat all of it.
UNESCO recorded 2,454 plant and animal species across the inscribed property. Among them are 53 species found nowhere outside the Yellow Sea, 114 fish species, two marine mammals, and 216 species of birds. Of those birds, 24 are globally threatened.
For comparison, the Gochang flats alone hold 255 marine species and host 101 migratory bird species. That density in a single component is why scientists tend to talk about the Yellow Sea the way they talk about the Amazon.
The Busan Vote That Redrew the Map
The original inscription came in 2021, and it did not come easily. Korea’s nomination initially struggled, because evaluators questioned whether four scattered sites adequately captured the ecosystem. The country was asked to come back with more.
It did. The 48th session of the World Heritage Committee met in Busan in July 2026. On July 26, the Committee approved “Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats Phase II.”
The extension added flats at Seosan in South Chungcheong Province. Goheung, Muan, and Yeosu in South Jeolla Province joined as well. Roughly 28,000 hectares entered the property itself, alongside about 24,800 hectares of new buffer zone. Total inscribed area now stands at 156,386 hectares, with a further 105,303 hectares of buffer.
The bookkeeping is slightly confusing, however, because the new areas were folded into existing groupings rather than simply appended. Goheung and Yeosu merged with the Boseong-Suncheon flats. Muan’s Tandoman joined the Shinan component. Hamhaeman and Seosan stand alone. Four components therefore became six, even though four new localities were added.
Tim Badman of the International Union for Conservation of Nature addressed the Committee directly. The expansion, he said, would meaningfully strengthen the site’s ecological value along the migratory corridor. The revised UNESCO description now covers estuarine, open-coast, archipelagic, and semi-enclosed flats. In short, it lists the full menu of ways mud can form.
For context, Korea holds 17 World Heritage properties. Until 2021, exactly one of them was natural: Jeju’s volcanic island and lava tubes. The tidal flats are the second, and the country’s heritage officials have been openly frustrated by that imbalance for years.
Six Sites, Four Kinds of Mud
Not all Korean mudflats are alike, and the inscription is deliberately built around that variety.
Seocheon, in South Chungcheong, is the estuarine type. The Geum River empties here, and the mix of fresh and salt water produces a shifting mosaic of sand bars and channels. It is also the closest major component to Seoul, roughly three hours by train and bus.
Gochang, in North Jeolla, is the open embayed type — a wide, exposed bay with the coarse, sandy sediment that comes from strong wave action. Local fishing families have worked these flats for generations, and the six-metre tidal range makes the daily transformation especially theatrical.
Shinan, in South Jeolla, is the archipelago type, and it is the giant of the group. This is a county of more than a thousand islands, where mud, salt farms, and ferry routes braid together. Muan’s Tandoman flats now belong to this component as well.
Boseong-Suncheon, on the south coast, is the semi-enclosed type, sheltered behind headlands and famous for the reed beds that ring the bay. Goheung and Yeosu joined this grouping in 2026.
Each type accumulates sediment differently, hosts slightly different species, and supports a different local economy. Taken together, they make the argument that the property is not a collection of pretty views but a working system.
The Flyway: Why Korea Tidal Flats Matter From Alaska to Australia
Here is the part that turns a regional conservation story into a global one.
The Getbol Korean tidal flats sit at the geographic midpoint of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. This migratory corridor runs from the Arctic breeding grounds of Siberia and Alaska down to Australia and New Zealand. Millions of shorebirds use it every year. Crucially, almost none of them can make the journey in a single hop.
They need to refuel. The Yellow Sea is where they do it.
A bar-tailed godwit or a great knot arrives here after a flight of several thousand kilometres. To save weight, it has burned through its fat and even shrunk its own internal organs. Over the following weeks, it eats clams and worms almost continuously, nearly doubles its body mass, and then leaves. The mud is not scenery for these birds. Rather, it is the only petrol station on a very long road.
Among the species that depend on it are the spoon-billed sandpiper, the Far Eastern curlew, Nordmann’s greenshank, and the black-faced spoonbill. The spoon-billed sandpiper is the emblem of the crisis: fewer than a thousand of them are thought to survive.
The East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership coordinates the international response. Established in 2006 and headquartered in Incheon, it now brings together 42 partners across 22 countries and manages a network of 159 designated sites. Korea hosting the secretariat is not a coincidence; the country sits on the pinch point of the entire route.
Consequently, when Korea protects or destroys a stretch of tidal flat, the effect shows up in bird counts in Australia two seasons later. Few conservation causes have such a clean line of transmission.
The 9.2 Trillion Won Question
Conservation arguments tend to lose to economic ones. Korean officials therefore learned to make the economic argument instead.
A 2021 valuation put the annual ecosystem services of the country’s tidal flats at roughly 9.2 trillion won, or about $6.2 billion. That figure bundles several things: water purification as the mud filters pollutants, disaster mitigation as the flats absorb storm surge, fisheries production, and carbon sequestration.
The heritage designation adds its own numbers. Officials project around 862.3 billion won in production effects and roughly 6,300 jobs flowing from the expanded listing, mostly through tourism, site management, and related services.
Suncheon offers the clearest proof that the model works. The city began protecting its bay in the early 2000s, secured Ramsar recognition in 2006, and then built a national garden beside the wetland. Two decades on, the Suncheon Bay National Garden drew about 4.5 million visitors and posted operating profit of roughly 12 billion won. During the spring holiday period in 2026, some 200,000 people came through in a matter of days, including cruise passengers arriving by the thousand.
That is a small provincial city monetising mud and reeds. Furthermore, it did so without the manufacturing base or the corporate headquarters that usually decide which Korean regions thrive. In a country where regional tourism economies increasingly determine whether provinces survive depopulation, that lesson travels.
Life on the Korean Mudflats
Behind the valuation sits an older economy that predates every acronym in this article.
Korean coastal villages have harvested the flats for centuries. The catch is specific and seasonal. Bajirak, the Manila clam, comes out of the sediment. Nakji, the long-arm octopus, gets pulled from its burrow by hand. Blue crabs and gim — the laver seaweed that becomes the sheets around your gimbap — round out the list. Most Korean clam harvests have historically gone to Japan.
The work is physically brutal. Harvesters, many of them women in their sixties and seventies, walk out behind small wooden sleds. They sink to their knees in mud and work the tide window until the water starts coming back. In summer they contend with heat and sun glare. In winter the mud is close to freezing.
Access is governed by eochongye, village fishing cooperatives that allocate rights to specific grounds. It is one of the more durable commons systems anywhere. Harvesting rights belong to the village rather than to individuals, membership is regulated, and grounds are rested. Economists studying common-pool resources often cite Korea’s coastal cooperatives as local governance preventing collapse.
The pressure now is demographic rather than ecological. Harvesters are ageing, young people leave, and the knowledge of where the clams sit in a particular bay does not transfer easily. IUCN’s assessment explicitly lists the loss of traditional fishing methods as a threat to the site’s value. That is an unusual entry for a natural heritage listing, and a telling one.
Korea’s broader fishing economy faces a similar squeeze, with participation high but profitability stubbornly thin.
Saemangeum: The Counterexample
You cannot tell this story honestly without the flats that are gone.
In 1991, Korea began building a seawall across the Saemangeum estuary on the west coast. This was where the Mangyeong and Dongjin rivers met the sea. The plan was to reclaim the flats for farmland, boosting food security and developing a poor region. Construction dragged on through lawsuits and protests. During one famous march, monks and activists prostrated themselves every three steps along the length of the country.
The seawall closed in 2010. At 33.9 kilometres, Guinness certified it as the longest in the world. Behind it, roughly 400 square kilometres of estuary — an area around two-thirds the size of Seoul — stopped being tidal.
Before closure, an estimated 400,000 shorebirds had used the estuary each year. Afterward, counts collapsed. Great knot numbers across the flyway fell sharply. Researchers traced declines in Australian wintering populations directly back to the loss of this single site. In conservation science, it remains one of the cleanest cases of a local decision producing a hemispheric effect.
Meanwhile, the farmland never really materialised as planned. The land-use blueprint has been revised repeatedly — from agriculture, to a complex city, to renewable energy. Today Saemangeum hosts a large floating solar project. In 2026 the government also confirmed that Hyundai Motor Group will break ground on an AI data centre there in March 2027. A coastal arboretum is due to open on the reclaimed land the same year.
There is an irony worth sitting with. The reclaimed estuary is being greened and marketed as an eco-development, while 200 kilometres south, the mud that was never touched has become World Heritage. Additionally, IUCN now lists the proposed Saemangeum International Airport, six kilometres from an inscribed component, as a high-level threat to the site.
The past is not finished with these coasts.
Carbon in the Mud
The newest argument for the Getbol Korean tidal flats is a climate one.
Coastal ecosystems store carbon in their sediment, and they do it fast. Salt marsh, seagrass, and mangrove soils can lock away carbon at rates that outpace forests per hectare, largely because the waterlogged, oxygen-poor mud prevents decomposition. Collectively this is called blue carbon.
Korea has gone in hard. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has published a national blue carbon strategy. Researchers, meanwhile, are pushing to get Korean tidal flats recognised as a carbon sink under international accounting rules. At present, salt marsh vegetation counts under IPCC guidance while bare tidal flat sediment does not. Billions of won ride on that distinction.
In the meantime, restoration projects are proceeding. A second public–private programme launched for the Seocheon flats in 2026, with 26 billion won committed through 2029. The partners are an unusual mix. They include the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Seocheon County, the Korea Marine Foundation, and Kia. The plan converts abandoned aquaculture ponds into salt marsh, rebuilds bird habitat, and adds an education centre.
Kia’s involvement is the tell. Korean corporates need credible domestic offsets for ESG reporting, and restored mudflats photograph considerably better than a spreadsheet of purchased credits. Whether that enthusiasm survives the first serious audit of the carbon accounting is the open question.
Still, the direction is clear. Mud that was worth nothing in 1991 now has at least three separate valuations attached to it — fisheries, tourism, and carbon.
How to Visit the Getbol Korean Tidal Flats
Now the practical part, because these places are genuinely open to visitors and almost entirely unvisited by foreigners.
Suncheon Bay
This is the easy entry point and the one to choose if you only have a day. Suncheon sits on the KTX line, roughly three hours from Seoul. The wetland reserve has boardwalks running out through the reed beds. A short climb up to the Yongsan Observatory then delivers the view from every Korean tourism poster: an S-shaped tidal channel curling through the mud at sunset.
Autumn is the classic season, when the reeds turn gold and the migratory birds arrive. Winter brings hooded cranes. The adjacent national garden is a separate ticket and a separate afternoon.
Shinan and Jeungdo
For the archipelago version, head to Shinan. Jeungdo is a designated Slow City reachable by bridge and ferry. It holds the Taepyeong Salt Farm, the largest solar salt works in Korea, where seawater is walked through evaporation ponds by hand. Nearby, mudflat experience programmes let you wade in, dig for clams, and generally ruin your shoes.
Shinan is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Getting there takes effort from Seoul, but the payoff is a coastline that looks like nowhere else in Northeast Asia.
Seocheon and Gochang
Seocheon is the closest component to the capital and pairs well with the Geum River estuary bird sanctuary. Gochang offers the widest exposed flats and the most dramatic tidal swing.
Reading the tide
One rule matters more than the rest: check the tide table before you go. A flat at high water is simply the sea. At low water it becomes a walkable plain extending for kilometres. The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency publishes daily tide times, and visitor centres post them at the entrance.
Go about two hours before low tide. Never walk out beyond sight of the shoreline markers. Never ignore a returning tide either, because it crosses level mud faster than most people can walk. Local guides exist for a reason.

What Comes Next for Korea’s Tidal Flats
The listing is not a happy ending, and IUCN was careful to say so.
Its 2025 assessment rates the conservation outlook as “good with some concerns.” The concerns are specific. Infrastructure pressure ranks highest, including the proposed Saemangeum airport and continued inter-island bridge construction. Marine pollution arrives from both land and sea. Offshore wind expansion, driven by Korea’s renewable energy targets, presents an awkward conflict between two green objectives.
Then there is Spartina alterniflora, an invasive cordgrass that colonises bare mud and converts it into dense meadow. Removal work is underway, though the species has overwhelmed flats elsewhere in the Yellow Sea.
Climate change sits in the assessment as data-deficient, which is its own kind of warning. Nobody yet knows precisely how rising seas and shifting sediment supply will reshape these flats.
The most interesting development, however, is diplomatic. The Yellow Sea is shared, and the flyway does not stop at national boundaries. China inscribed its own migratory bird sanctuaries along the Yellow Sea coast in 2019 and expanded them in 2024. Following the Busan session, Korean officials began openly discussing a pan-Yellow Sea framework. It would link the Korean and Chinese properties into a single conservation conversation, potentially with North Korean flats in the picture as well.
That would be remarkable. Regional politics in Northeast Asia rarely produce cooperation. Yet shorebirds are among the few subjects on which Seoul, Beijing, and Pyongyang share a non-negotiable interest.
The Case for Going
Korea sells itself abroad on cities, food, and pop culture. Its natural landscapes get a thinner treatment, usually amounting to Jeju and a hiking trail or two. Visitors who venture further tend to find coastlines nobody warned them about.
The Getbol Korean tidal flats belong in that category, though they demand something from you. They are not photogenic in the conventional sense. On a grey afternoon, a mudflat looks like a parking lot that has been flooded and drained. You have to stand there for a while. Watch the crabs emerge, listen to the sediment ticking as it drains, and register that hundreds of thousands of birds have organised their lives around this place.
Then the tide turns, and the whole plain disappears under water in about an hour.
UNESCO has now said, twice, that this is worth keeping for everyone. The harder work — balancing airports, wind farms, ageing harvesters, and an invasive grass — starts after the vote. In the meantime, the mud is still there, still breathing twice a day, and still almost entirely yours to walk on.
