Ask a foreign visitor what they expect from a Korean winter, and many will describe something they saw in a drama: a white mountain, a frozen lake, a couple in long coats under falling flakes. Then comes the follow-up question that arrives in travel forums every single autumn. Does Korea have eternal snow, the kind that never melts? The answer is no, and it has always been no. Yet the story of Korea disappearing snow is far stranger than a simple geography lesson, because the country is now losing the seasonal snow it did have — and losing it fast enough to close resorts, empty towns and rewrite the winter economy.

This is not an abstract climate essay. Rather, it is a business story with a body count of shuttered lifts.

Below, we trace Korea disappearing snow from the geology that made eternal snowfields impossible, through 113 years of temperature records, into the balance sheets of the twelve ski resorts still standing. Along the way, one uncomfortable paradox keeps surfacing. Demand for Korean snow has never been higher, and supply has never been lower.

Why Korea Never Had Eternal Snow in the First Place

Perennial snow, sometimes called eternal snow, forms where more snow falls each year than melts. Geographers call the boundary the snowline. In the mid-latitudes, that line usually sits somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 metres above sea level. Korea simply does not reach it.

Hallasan, on Jeju Island, is the highest peak in South Korea at 1,947 metres. Jirisan follows at 1,915 metres, and Seoraksan at 1,708 metres. All three sit roughly a kilometre below the altitude where snow could survive a Korean August. Consequently, the white caps you see in winter photography are seasonal, not permanent.

North of the border, Baekdusan rises to 2,744 metres, and patches of snow do sometimes linger into summer in shaded hollows near the caldera. However, glaciologists call those snow patches, not perennial snowfields. There is no ice cap on the Korean peninsula. Moreover, there has not been one for a very long time.

So “Korea’s eternal snow” is a phrase describing something that does not exist. That absence is exactly why the current shrinkage matters so much. When a country’s entire snow supply is seasonal, a warmer season does not thin the snow. Instead, it deletes it.

Put differently, Korea disappearing snow is not a slow retreat of ancient ice. There is no ice to retreat. What is vanishing is a recurring event, and events can stop happening altogether.

Korea Disappearing Snow, Measured Across 113 Years

Korea keeps unusually long weather records for an Asian country, and the numbers behind Korea disappearing snow are blunt. The Korea Meteorological Administration compared the period from 1912 to 1940 against 1995 to 2024. Summer grew by 25 days. Winter shrank by 22.

That reversal is worth pausing on. A century ago, winter was the longest season in Korea, averaging 109 days. Today summer holds that title at roughly 123 days. In other words, the season that defined the Korean calendar has been demoted within a single lifetime.

Other indicators point the same way. Annual mean temperatures have climbed about 0.21°C per decade over those 113 years. Cold wave days fell from 3.7 per year in the 1910s to 1.1 in the 2020s. Meanwhile tropical nights jumped from 6.7 to 28, a 4.2-fold increase. Rainfall totals rose even as the number of rainy days fell, which means precipitation now arrives in heavier, more concentrated bursts.

For snow, the implication is straightforward. Warmer air holds more moisture, so storms can be violent. Yet warmer air also pushes the rain-snow line uphill. As a result, the same weather system that would have dropped 30 centimetres of powder in 1970 may now deliver cold rain to the valley and slush to the slope. Korea is not becoming dry. Korea is becoming wet in the wrong phase.

This shift already drives real commercial demand. Korean utilities, insurers and logistics firms now buy forecasting products at a scale that has turned weather data into an actual technology sector.

The First Casualty of Korea Disappearing Snow: Ski Resorts

Nowhere is the snow loss in Korea more visible than on a chairlift.

Since 1975, seventeen ski resorts have opened in South Korea. Today roughly twelve remain in operation, and more than half of the closures happened within the past three years. Star Hill Resort in Namyangju shut in 2021, and its operators named the causes plainly: a shrinking ski population and global warming.

Visitor numbers tell the same story with a sharper edge. The 2011–12 season drew about 6.86 million skiers and snowboarders, an all-time peak. The pandemic floor was 1.46 million. Recovery has been partial at best, with recent seasons landing near 4.4 million — roughly 60 percent of the peak, more than a decade later.

Operating days have compressed too. Korean resorts once ran 120 to 130 days per season. Now many run 80 to 100. Industry estimates put the average decline at 20 to 30 percent compared with ten years ago. Because fixed costs stay fixed, a shorter season is not a proportional loss. It is a margin collapse.

Demographics compound the damage. Korea’s birth rate crisis has hollowed out the school-trip market that once filled beginner slopes on weekday mornings. Furthermore, younger Koreans have shifted their leisure spending toward gaming, camping and travel abroad. Japan’s powder, in particular, is cheap and only two hours away.

The Korea Times reported on this convergence of climate and demography, and the framing has held up well. Two curves are falling at once, and neither one is scheduled to turn around.

Crucially, this is where Korea disappearing snow stops being a weather headline and starts being an asset-pricing problem. A chairlift has a thirty-year service life. A snow season, by contrast, is now negotiated one November at a time.

Ninety Percent of Korean Snow Is Manufactured Already

Here is the number that reframes everything: industry insiders estimate that Korean resorts rely on artificial snow for roughly 90 percent of their surface.

That dependence is not new, and it is not shameful. Korea’s mountains are relatively low, its winters historically dry, and its slopes close to major cities. Snowmaking solved a real problem for decades. Even the 2018 Winter Olympics ran on it. NPR reported at the time that the snow beneath the world’s best alpine racers in Pyeongchang was almost entirely machine-made.

However, snowmaking has a hard physical limit. Snow guns need wet-bulb temperatures around −3°C or colder to work efficiently. Above that threshold, the water does not crystallise; it simply falls as expensive mist. Therefore every degree of warming does not gradually reduce a resort’s output. Instead, it removes whole nights from the production calendar.

The cost structure makes this brutal. Snowmaking consumes electricity, compressed air and enormous volumes of water, and it must run hardest in exactly the pre-season window that is warming fastest. Korean resorts now routinely delay opening, then race to build a base during short cold snaps. Consequently, the business has become a gamble on a handful of freezing nights in late November.

Several operators have started hedging with better forecasting, automated gun control and thermal mapping of slopes. Nevertheless, no algorithm makes snow at +2°C.

Machine snow also behaves differently underfoot. It is denser, icier and harsher on equipment than natural powder, which is one reason serious Korean skiers increasingly fly to Japan. Korea disappearing snow therefore costs the industry twice. First it raises production costs, and then it degrades the product those costs are meant to protect.

The Towns That Melt With the Korean Snow Season

A resort closing is a corporate event. For the valley below, it is closer to an amputation.

Small businesses around Korean ski areas typically earn 60 to 80 percent of their winter revenue from resort traffic. Guesthouses, chicken restaurants, rental shops, taxi drivers and convenience stores all share one customer base. When the season shortens by a month, that revenue does not migrate elsewhere. It vanishes.

Gangwon Province carries most of this exposure, since roughly nine of the surviving resorts sit within its borders. The province has spent two decades trying to diversify, with mixed results. Some of that effort has genuinely worked, and the region’s broader tourism identity now extends well beyond skiing, as anyone who has explored Gangwon’s coastline, mountains and small cities can confirm.

Other bets have been heavier. Jeongseon, a former coal town, famously wagered its future on a casino rather than on snow — a story we covered in detail in how Jeongseon rebuilt itself around gambling. Meanwhile, coastal towns have discovered surprisingly durable year-round demand, including the scuba diving boom along the east coast.

Still, none of these substitutes fully replaces a good snow year. Skiing concentrates enormous spending into twelve weeks. Very little else in a mountain economy does that.

There is a demographic layer underneath as well. Korean mountain counties already rank among the fastest-ageing districts in the country, and winter work has long been what kept younger residents from leaving. When Korea disappearing snow shortens that work by a month, the population math accelerates in the same direction. Ultimately, a closed resort exports people, not just revenue.

Pyeongchang’s Ghost Venues and the Cost of Betting on Winter

The 2018 Winter Olympics were supposed to secure Korea’s place as a winter sports nation. Financially, the legacy has been punishing.

Gangwon Province has reported roughly ₩10.1 billion in annual operating losses across the Olympic venues, with cumulative deficits reaching about ₩35.5 billion over six years. Some facilities found second lives as training centres. Others have struggled to justify their maintenance budgets at all.

The Jeongseon Alpine Centre remains the most contested site. Building it required clearing old-growth forest on Gariwangsan, a mountain with protected status, and the restoration dispute has continued into 2026 without resolution. Supporters argue the venue is a rare national asset for alpine training. Critics counter that Korea is maintaining a downhill course in a country with a shrinking snow season and a shrinking ski population.

Both sides are describing the same problem from different ends. Korea built permanent infrastructure for a temporary climate. Consequently, the Olympic legacy has become the clearest public ledger of what Korea disappearing snow actually costs.

The Paradox: More Tourists, Less Korean Snow

Now for the twist that makes the Korean case unusual.

While domestic demand for snow collapses, international demand is surging. South Korea welcomed a record number of foreign visitors in 2025, with forecasts near 18.7 million, surpassing pre-pandemic highs. A significant share of that growth comes from Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong — places where it does not snow at all.

For those travellers, snow is the product. Tour operators sell “first snow” packages explicitly. Groups from Bangkok, Manila and Singapore arrive in January specifically to touch it, photograph it, and stand in it wearing rented ski jackets. Ski lessons for absolute beginners have become a major revenue line, and several resorts now brief instructors in Thai and Mandarin. The official Korea Tourism Organization guide to ski resorts reflects this pivot clearly.

Winter festivals follow the same logic. The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival, held in early 2026 from 10 January to 1 February, draws crowds to drill holes in a frozen river and fish for trout by hand. In addition, mountain villages market snow-viewing walks and hot spring packages. The formula is simple and effective. However, all of it depends on ice thick enough to stand on.

Therein lies the mismatch. Foreign demand for Korean snow is rising sharply, while the physical supply of Korean snow is falling. Korea has, in effect, discovered a booming market for a depleting resource. That is a familiar and uncomfortable position for any industry.

Seasonal tourism does work in Korea when the underlying asset is stable. Autumn proves it: the fall foliage economy moves trillions of won through the provinces each year. Leaves, though, still turn on schedule. Snow no longer does.

Marketing has quietly adapted to that gap. Winter campaigns now emphasise experiences that survive a bad snow year — hot springs, night markets, illuminated gardens, saunas and Korean food in cold weather. Notably, almost none of these require actual snowfall. In effect, the tourism board has been hedging against Korea disappearing snow for several seasons already, even if nobody phrases it that way in a brochure.

Blizzards Are Not the Opposite of Korea Disappearing Snow

Sceptics have an obvious rebuttal, and it deserves a serious answer. In late November 2024, Seoul was buried.

The storm dropped more than 16 centimetres in a single day on 27 November, and totals near the capital reached 26 centimetres, with Yongin recording 47.5 centimetres. It was Seoul’s heaviest November snowfall since record-keeping began in 1907. Flights were cancelled by the hundreds, ferries stayed in port, and six people died in Gyeonggi Province. NASA’s Earth Observatory captured the aftermath from orbit.

So how does a record blizzard fit a story about vanishing winter?

Rather neatly, as it happens. The storm formed because the Yellow Sea was unusually warm while cold air pushed across it. That temperature contrast loaded the air with moisture, which then dumped over the capital region. Warmer seas therefore make individual snow events more extreme, even as the overall season contracts.

Climate scientists describe this as increased variance around a shifting mean. Practically, it means Korea now gets fewer snow days, punctuated by occasional violent ones. For a ski resort, that is the worst possible distribution. One enormous November storm does not build a season, especially when December arrives at +5°C and washes the base away.

Extreme heat produces the same pattern on the other end of the calendar, which is why Korean manufacturers have built an entire industry around cooling clothing and heat-protection gear. Both trends stem from one cause.

What Replaces the Korean Snow Season

Given all of the above, the surviving industry has to answer a practical question. If Korea disappearing snow is structural rather than cyclical, what exactly is a mountain resort selling in 2035?

Three answers are already visible on the ground.

First, become a four-season resort. High1, Yongpyong, Vivaldi Park and Konjiam have all pushed water parks, golf, mountain biking, MICE facilities and hotel operations. For several of them, skiing is no longer the profit centre. Rather, it is a seasonal amenity attached to a real estate and hospitality business.

Second, sell the experience instead of the sport. Beginner-focused packages aimed at first-time snow tourists carry higher margins than season passes for experts. Equipment rental, lessons, photo services and transport from Seoul all scale with headcount, not with snow quality. Notably, a novice from Kuala Lumpur does not care whether the base is natural or machine-made.

Third, go indoors. Indoor snow domes and dry-slope facilities decouple the business from weather entirely. Capital costs are high and energy demands are significant. Even so, an indoor slope runs 365 days a year and prices its risk on electricity rather than on the sky.

None of these fully preserves what is being lost. A four-season resort with a token slope is not a ski town. Nevertheless, the alternative for many operators is closure, and the market has already demonstrated which resorts run out of runway first.

If You Still Want to See Snow in Korea

For visitors, the practical picture is better than the industry picture. Korea disappearing snow does not mean an empty white map. It means snow has become less reliable and far more geographically concentrated.

Go to the Yeongdong region. The eastern side of the Taebaek range, including Daegwallyeong, Taebaek and the mountains behind Gangneung, receives Korea’s most dependable heavy snowfall. Cold northeasterly air crossing the East Sea dumps its moisture there first. As a result, that corridor still delivers deep snow in years when Seoul barely sees a flake.

Go in mid-January to early February. Late December is increasingly unreliable, and March is effectively finished. The middle of January remains the safest window for both slopes and festivals.

Check opening dates rather than assuming them. Resorts now announce openings late and adjust constantly, since a single warm week can push a launch back by ten days.

Treat a blizzard as a bonus, not a plan. If you want a guaranteed white landscape, book a resort with strong snowmaking capacity rather than gambling on natural conditions.

Consider the festivals as a separate product. Ice fishing, snow sculpture events and mountain hot springs deliver a winter experience without requiring skill on a slope.

The Real Meaning of Korea’s Eternal Snow

The phrase that started this article turns out to be a useful mistake. Korea never had eternal snow, so the country built its winter identity on something inherently temporary — a season, not a landform. That worked for centuries because the season was long, cold and predictable.

Korea disappearing snow has ended that arrangement. The season is neither long nor predictable now. Twenty-two fewer winter days, one-third the cold waves, a ski industry down five resorts and two million annual visitors, and an Olympic legacy bleeding tens of billions of won: those are not forecasts. They already happened.

What remains is a decision about what Korean winter becomes next. Part of it will be manufactured, sold to travellers who have never seen snow and will not notice the difference. Another part will move indoors, priced against electricity rather than against the sky. The rest will simply end, quietly, in valleys where the lifts stopped turning and nobody wrote it down.

Korea disappearing snow is not a metaphor, then. It is an inventory, and the count falls every year.
